In solid iron and steel, sulfur is partially soluble and partially contained in inclusions. Sulfide inclusions may come from several sources:
(1) Desulfurization products in steel, such as CaS, MnS and CeS;
(2) the sulfur dissolved in liquid iron and steel, when the temperature drops below the liquid line and lower, will be precipitated in the form of sulfide;
(3) Due to the general presence of oxide inclusions in the liquid steel, they can play the core role of sulfide precipitation, so often found in steel oxide coated with a layer of sulfide inclusions.
In solid steel, the sulfide inclusions of calcium, manganese, and iron sometimes do not exist alone, because CaS, MnS, and FeS are stable in direct contact with the corresponding oxides, and they can coexist in separate phases in CaO, MnO, FeO and other inclusions to form composite inclusions.
In addition, inclusions of (Mn, Cr) S and (Mn, Fe) S types as well as certain thioxocompound types are also found in steel.
