Sulfur is one of the most common harmful impurities in steel. How to reduce sulfur content of steel is an important subject to improve steel quality. Calcium aluminate refining slag is mainly used in iron and steel refining furnace deoxidization and desulfurization, its desulfurization rate is higher than 90%, and it is one of the most commonly used metallurgical auxiliary materials for iron and steel refining.

The main components of calcium aluminate refining slag are calcium oxide, alumina and a small amount of magnesium oxide, silicon oxide, etc. The content of each component has great influence on the desulphurization. The content of calcium oxide is generally controlled at 50-58%. When the content of calcium oxide is more than 60%, the desulfidation amount will become smaller and smaller. The high content of calcium oxide will lead to the solid precipitation in the calcium aluminate refining slag, increase the slag viscosity and reduce the fluidity. The desulphurization capacity of magnesium oxide in refining slag is slightly lower than that of calcium oxide. A small amount of magnesium oxide can not only improve the desulphurization rate, but also reduce the burning corrosion of ladle lining and prolong the coating age. At the same time, there is a linear relationship between the desulfurization rate and the time during LF refining.
