Premelt type refining slag in the slag washing mainly depends on two aspects:
1. When the original inclusions in steel collide with the emulsified slag drops, they are absorbed and assimilated by the slag drops and float up with the slag drops to remove the slag. When the emulsified slag drops are stirred strongly with the molten steel, so that the opportunity of contact between the original inclusions in steel and the slag drops, especially the human particles, increases sharply. The interfacial tension between slag and inclusion is much smaller than that between molten steel and inclusion. It is reported that the wetting Angle between slag and inclusion is 15°~20°, and the wetting Angle between molten steel and inclusion is 120°~170°, so the inclusion in steel is easy to be adsorbed by the slag droplets in its collision.
The pre-melting slag used in slag washing process (different furnace slag washing mostly chooses CaO-Al2O3 system, and the same furnace slag washing can be white slag or lime-fire brick slag, etc.) are all oxide melts, and the inclusions are also oxides, so the inclusions adsorbed by slag are easier to dissolve in the slag drops, this melting process is called assimilation. The inclusion is assimilated by the droplet, which makes the droplet grow and accelerates the floating process of the droplet.
2. It promotes the discharge of the secondary reaction products, thus reducing the number of inclusions in the finished steel. In the slag washing process, the surface of the emulsified slag drops can be used as the product core for the formation of new phase in the deoxidation reaction. Since the free energy required to form a new phase is not much increased, deoxygenation can take place at less supersaturation. At this time, the deoxidized products are easier to be assimilated by slag drops and float up with slag drops, so the number of deoxidized products remaining in the steel is significantly reduced, which is the reason why slag washing steel is relatively pure.
